Our Surprising Visit to Banyan Air Service FBO Fort Lauderdale

5,000 Square Foot Pilot Shop

Jorge spends a fair amount of his time at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport (FXE). That’s part of his day job, private jet charter broker. But on this trip, we both got to see the premier FBO there. Our surprising visit to Banyan Air Service FBO in Fort Lauderdale turned out to be something like we have never seen before. It was unique to say the least.

Jorge has been here multiple times as they have a beautiful 20,000 square foot hangar in which they allow selected charities to hold events. That was the purpose of our visit, on behalf of an upcoming charity event. Yes, we do that too, help charities raise money.

We got the full tour from Linda Li, Banyan’s Marketing Manager. And I mean full tour. She mentioned in passing they had a “pilots’ shop”.

Usually, when you hear that name the vision of some posters on a wall in a little isolated area with some basic items, like batteries, comes to mind.

What a surprise, for starters it is 5,000 square feet. Then right in the middle of the retail floor, next to the sunglasses and the flight bags, is the front half of a Gulfstream jet.

Then there is the Flight Simulator Room which has multiple fully functional flight simulators, I mean the real ones that pilots use for certifications. I’m not kidding, they are rented out by the hour to log real flight hours. So, a flight school inside of a pilots’ shop, can’t make this stuff up.

For a new pilot, a headset is a big investment. Banyan has an actual noise simulator to try out your new Bose A20 or the Lightspeed Zulu 3. It mimics the deafening roar of a piston engine so you can hear how well the noise-canceling works before you buy your new headset.

And if you’re into tech, the avionics section is serious for your bank account. They have interactive displays from Garmin where you can mess with touchscreens and knobs. It’s like a Best Buy for pilots, but with way higher stakes and much cooler buttons. It’s hands-on, so way better than looking at a PDF manual.

Beyond the serious pilot stuff, they’ve got the lifestyle side covered.
We’re talking about the good stuff:
  • Aviation Apparel: From “I’d rather be flying” tees to professional uniforms that actually look tailored.
  • Maintenance Haul: Linda mentioned they have the largest selection of off-the-shelf maintenance supplies in South Florida. If you’re an owner-operator at FXE, this is your Home Depot.
  • The Gift Section: If you need a gift for an Av Geek that isn’t a tourist keychain, this is the spot.
This is not your typical FBO.

The shop is tucked inside the Banyan Air Service FBO complex. If you’ve never been to an FBO (Fixed Base Operator), it’s basically a luxury terminal for private jets.

Being at FXE gives the shop unique energy. You’ll see student pilots from the local schools rubbing shoulders with corporate pilots who just flew in on a Challenger 350. It’s a melting pot of the South Florida aviation scene. You can grab your charts, get a coffee, and watch millions of dollars’ worth of aircraft taxi past the window.

After you tour Banyan, you’ll understand why the sign at the front reception area says, “Voted #1 FBO in America”.

And again, our special thanks to Linda Li and all the great staff at Banyan for their time and helping with hosting charity events.

We’d love to hear from you, call us at: (407)-501-5054  or send us an email at: Talk@AircraftGuys.com.

On to the next adventure.
